MSc Programs

  1. Climate and Society with specializations in:
    • Applied Climate Science, and
    • Climate Affairs
  2. Meteorology and Climate Risk Management with specializations in:
    • Hydro-Meteorology,
    • Agro-Meteorology, and
    • Climate and Health

Both the MSc programs are full-time. Each program has two categories of courses: common courses and specialization courses. All students attending the program shall take the common modules first before choosing their field of specialization. Every graduate student will take the common courses in the first semester and will attend their interest of specialization courses in second semester. After successful completion of all the required course works, the student shall undertake a research project and prepare a thesis on a theme related to the area of his/her specialization. If the student chooses not to do the thesis work, s/he still has the chance of receiving a PG diploma.

Graduation requirements

A focused, coherent program of study approved by the Advisor and Advisory Committee is planned prior to or during the second semester in the student’s residency. This program requires, beyond B.Sc. degree, a minimum of 86 ECTS course work and 34 ECTS of thesis research. Undergraduate courses will not be counted as part of the students’ graduate program.

According to the rules and regulations of Mekelle University, students in this program will be able to graduate if and only if the students:

  1. Complete the entire course with a minimum of 120 ECTS.
  2. Score minimum CGPA of 3.0 for the total number of calculable ECTS for which they have been registered.
  3. A passing mark (C+ and above) in each of the required courses,
  4. No ‘F’ grade for any course they have been registered.
  5. A passing mark in defending the thesis publicly.

A candidate may stay for more than 2 years under valid reasons. Upon successful completion of the training, the degrees awarded to the graduates of each program shall be named as follows:

  1. Master of Science Degree in Climate and Society: (“የሳይንስ ማስተርስ ድግሪ በአየር ንብረትና የህብረተሰብ ጉዳዬች): (i) Specialization in Applied Climate Sciences (“የአየር ንብረት ሳይንስ ልዩ ሙያ”) (ii) Specialization in Climate Affairs (“የአየር ንብረት ጉዳዬች ልዩ ሙያ”).
  2. Master of Science Degree in Meteorology and Climate Risk Management (“የሳይንስ ማስተርስ ድግሪ በሚቲዎሮሎጂና በአየር ንብረት አደጋ ስጋት አስተዳደር”):  i) Specialization in Hydro-Meteorology (“የሃይድሮ ሚቲዎሮሎጂ ልዩ ሙያ”)  (ii) Specialization in Agro-Meteorology  (“የአግሮ ሚቲዎሮሎጂ ልዩ ሙያ”) & (iii) Specialization in Climate and Health (“የአየር ንብረትና ጤና ልዩ ሙያ”)
